How to make a dog get in its doghouse when it doesn't want to?

Every summer some friends go on vacation and I have to take care of their 2 dogs and 1 cat. The problem is that every time I want to get him in his doghouse, it starts running. When I put the chain on him he fells down and I am afraid of pulling him because I don't want to heart him. I lift him on his own 2 feet, but he leans and I am afraid of breaking his legs. His boss told me to take a treat, make him smell it and then pull him from the collar and put him in his doghouse. Do you have any other solutions if this trick doesn't work?
