Got caught shoplifting at Walmart, what do I do?

I got caught shoplifting a $15 item and Walmart's loss prevention guy caught me at the door. I have a clean record, Im just really low on money, unemployed and in need of a car. The guy took me to the back room where he took down all my information, and got a picture but no cops were called and I didnt sign anything. I left with a letter from Walmart's attorney place (Palmer, Reifler oc.) saying they would call me and most likely send me letters. Should I pay the fee that they ask? Im guessing its going to be about $265 and I cant afford that. Ive heard people say, pay the ridiculous fee and then Ive heard just ignore the letters and stuff and they most likely wont sue you and they wont prosecute thefts under $25 I've heard, what should I do?
