I want to travel to an island or South America next spring for carnival. Where should I go?

I have heard that Trinidad, Brazil and Baranquilla, Colombia are great carnival celebrations, can someone comment on these and suggest others? I want to have fun but I don't want to get shot or have to worry about where I can go. I will be traveling alone and am a male.
